We are carnivores

As paleo and primal become more complex, authoritarian, licensed, profit driven, subverted and infected with fear based marketing efforts, Primal North seeks to simplify, unify, and advocate a proper level of scientific skepticism to the world of paleo, primal and low carb nutrition. Meat is food, plants are medicine, food is fuel, and movement is pleasure. Lets stop making a mess of it!

My Top 2012 "Personal Choice - Most Credible" Blogger's List

I admittedly plucked these people from "Whoever comes to mind".  This list is not based on any sort of real scrutiny but instead it simply represents my own personal "who seems credible" top 10.

My personal top 10 based on my own sense of "Truthiness" and nothing more!

Yes, this post is meant in fun but also reflects my reading tastes.

Criteria

Those on this list are here because I find them to be genuine, concerned, knowledgeable, and without overt bias.

Additionally, actually being a living example counts!

The List, 2012

#10 - Chris Masterjohn, The Daily Lipid

Newly minted PHD but long time nutrition writer Chris Masterjohn, to tell you the truth I am not sure how he is my number 10 except I wanted to include him.

I do not make a point to read all he writes but he is very accessible to the main stream type of folk and is well spoken and makes sense and always has an air of credibility.

http://blog.cholesterol-and-health.com/

Main reason I like him:  He provides really good presentable and understandable challenges to public nutrition dogma

# 9 - Petro Dobromylskyj, Hyperlipid

Hyperlipid is a wonderful, information, tongue and cheek high fat nutrition blog and Peter does a great job of keeping it updated with stellar content.  He is not at all afraid to take on others and cast doubts (why this would appeal to me I have no idea).

Here is a wonderful sample:  "Should we abandon the carbohydrate hypothesis of obesity?"

Main reason I like him:  Doesn't take himself or others to seriously, wry humor that is sometimes hard to get and can seem rude.  Perfect!

#8, Norm Robillard of the Digestive Health Institute

Gut health came on my radar this year and Norm Robillard not only became a follower of Primal North, but an occasional correspondent.  I read and reviewed his book which he is giving away free for Christmas "Fast Tract Digestion"

The Digestive Health Institute site is a great start, along with Norm's book, for anyone with any gut issues that could be related to SIBO, etc...  My recommendation is when it comes to gut health we skip Kresser and go see Norm.  Norm has been making a full career studying gut microbes and has a great way of explaining it.  He has also started posting gut friendly recipes so be sure to friend him on Facebook!

Main reason I like him:  Approachable, hard working scientist, nuff said.

#7 - Elizabeth Leitch-Devlin of "Mostly Meat is What I Eat"

Cleary carnivorous and clearly one of the smartest people out thre, Liz has been helping people understand nutrition in Facebook groups all over and providing excellent clarity on all kinds of issues and that is why I reached out for her help at Primal North.

She seems to have a huge research library at her fingertips and has co-authored articles at Primal North and expanded her own blog MostlyMeatIsWhatIEat

One thing about Liz she is in love with finding the answers and the truth, not with her theories.

Main reason I like her:  Extremely open minded and thoroughly knowledgeable lay person who can go toe to toe with any expert on their best day, and a friend.

#6 - J. Stanton, Gnolls.org

Stanton's writing at Gnolls.org is simply motivational, and he gives excellent bite sized chunks of nutriton as well as narratives about how man evolved.  Great stuff and much of my own Predator Diet is based off his highly motivational article "Eat Like a Predator, Not Like Prey:  The Paleo Diet in 6 Easy Steps, A Motivational Guide"

J. was kind enough to donate a T-Shirt and book "Gnoll Credo", signed, to Primal North for our 250th fan contest but that is not why he is on the list.  He is here simply because I love to read what he writes, its more entertainment than not at this point.

J. writes only sporadically but its usually worth reading and always thought provoking or motivational.  J. has no diet or message "for sale".

Main reason I like him:  Very genuine guy with "neat ideas" and viewpoints.

#5 - Tom Naughton, Fathead

His movie Fat Head was great and what brought Primal to my attention as a viable approach.  His speeches are gold, and his love of good science and ability to explain to us how to also love good science keep Tom Naughton near the top of my blog feed.

Additionally Tom has gone out and "bought the farm", well his own farm.  The man lives a more Primal perfect life then anyone I can think of it seems.  I am always happy to read his "Farm Reports".  Good to see a man and his family with old fashioned, do it for yourself values making such a splash in nutrition and health.

Be sure to check out the best video ever, watch it and learn it before you go reading any nutrition writing of any kind.

Main reason I like him:  I actually feel quite indebted to Tom and his movie for making me understand I can enjoy steak and bacon again!  Talk about a debt that can never be repaid...

#4 - Nora Gedgaudaus, Primal Mind, Primal Body

Herself an epitome of good health, Nora certainly knows her stuff and her nutrition knowledge is hard to match.  While I find myself skeptical of many of the "holistic health" diagnosis she makes, I find that I simply cannot ignore her input and common sense style she explains her reasons for her beliefs with.

She is a very healthy person who goes promotes kettlebells and pull-ups as an incredibly awesome workout and she is exactly right.

Nora's site, Nora's Facebook Group

Main reason I like her:  Incredibly good and detailed nutrition information although I am not on board with much of her holistic health writings.  It doesn't matter to me, when Nora talks nutrients she always knows incredible amounts.

#2 (Tie) - Peter Attia, The Eating Academy

Praise the Lard for Petter Attia!

Living proof you can eat low carb and kick ass in the gym, on the bike, or on the road.

Petter Attia is an MD and a highly tuned in fitness practitioner who found he needed to combine both low carb and exercise to meet his goals.  He is perhaps our best example of a keto-adapted athlete.

Peter has established NUSI with Gary Taubes and we are sure to see some top quality information come as a result.  Sadly they have a lot of work to do before that happens.

Peter eats a real food, low carb, keto diet and is an accomplished bicycle athlete and in top shape.

His blog, the Eating Academy, is always a worthy read and the best info about Super Starch to be found.

Main reason I like him:  For proving to the doubters keto adaption is real and valid for athletic performance

Also #2 - Ben Greenfield of Ben Greenfield Fitness

Author of the "Low Carb Diet for Triathletes", Ben is experienced on race nutrition and training, a champion triathlete and personal trainer to some of the most elite Ironman athletes in the world.

Like our number 1, Ben lives what he speaks.  This = credible!

Ben lives his work and competes constantly.  His fitness and nutrition podcast is spot on and practices, much of the time, proper skepticism and an open minded view point.

Ben is a winner with a winning attitude and always worth listening to.

Check out his podcasts, they are fantastic free resources for anyone wanting better health and fitness.

Ben is the "Ross" of endurance training, which brings me to my #1

http://www.bengreenfieldfitness.com/

Podcasts - These are another group of wonderful podcasts I listen to when travelling

Main reason I like him:  Just a genuine guy with a very open minded and knowledgeable approach to nutrition and fitness, plus he seems to be a very approachable elite athlete, even at times posting where he is having a coffee and inviting anyone nearby to join him.

And my favorate blogger (and fitness author)

I consider it imperative that we all practice what we preach. This simple way of life is apparent throughout this site. It is my goal to instill credibility back to an industry that has been tarnished by false promises and bogus contraptions. I am all for simplicity in terms of training, modalities, and programming. I do not just write about these topics however. My time is spent offline in the gym with real athletes, experimenting with various protocols, and constantly researching new ideas and methodologies.  ~ Ross Enamait

#1 - Ross Enamait, RossTraining.com

And likely always will be my #1 Blogger

Any fool can make something complicated.  It takes genius to make something simple
~ Woody Guthrie

I actually saw a forum reply from Rob Wolffe from about 7 years ago where he was asked about Ross.  Rob's only criticism was there was not enough focus on gymnastic moves on Ross's routines.

So lets fast forward to today and look again at Ross.  He seems to have done just fine without focusing on gymnastics moves (simplification can do a lot huh?), although to be fair Ross has always incorporated some basic gymnastic type work such as rings, and I remember he had enrolled his kids in gymnastics as soon as they could walk!

While others are making a fortune off us in paleo, Ross is out training fighters... make that winning fighters.

That is what Ross does.  That is how he pays the bills.

He works one on with with the most fit athletes on the planet and helps them conquer, kick ass, and spit lead shot.

His food advice?  Its almost an afterthought, and its simple.  Eat real food! Supplements are a waste of money if you are not!

Train hard.  Keep it simple.  Bust your ass.  Don't overthink it, spend your time doing it instead.  Experience is a better teacher than theory, than books.

If you want to learn to swim jump into the water.
On dry land no frame of mind is ever going to help you
Bruce Lee

Wow hard work and real food!  Funny how so many of the "paleo world" are moving BACK to this simple message after hopelessly complicating things!

Ross lives what he speaks, and is a human wrecking machine.

His strength is actually exceeded by his conditioning and stamina.

He certainly lives it, and there is likely not a single "Crossfit Champion" that has not secretly been reading RossTraining.com and the forums.

Quite frankly I do not think Ross cares about paleo, low carb, etc...  But through application of technique and common sense has helped many MANY of us lose LOTS of weight with his simple message of "Eat real food, do real work".

Ross is the king of low tech, high effect.  He is also highly motivational and his writing will appeal to any red blooded man.  Ross is not a nutrition guru, Ross is a fucking warrior.  He is to fitness what Spartacus is to Greece.

I own 3 of Ross's books and two DVD's, all are well cited, all are practical, all are low cost, all routines are amazingly well periodized.  You WILL lose weight following Ross's books, you will also become indestructible, confident and enduring, if you apply them.

Ross is a good example of why we should all spend less time talking about it, and more time doing it!

Including me... and that is something I will be going back to in 2013.

Ross has never that I have seen, engaged in any personal attack or any fear based marketing.  He lets his own results speak for themselves but he has certainly schooled a few of his critics in grand style.

When it comes to keyboard warriors the gloves come off.  Check the link below for some classic "Ross Ownage"

Totally worth a watch :)

The formulation here is poor imho. It's not that they are without overt bias. It's in fact that they are with overt bias. For instance, Peter D. is biased and he isn't shy to say it overtly, that's what makes him credible and trustworthy. In opposition to that, Stephan Guyenet pretends to be neutral and unbiased but is most definitely not, as was demonstrated by the recent exchange with Peter and Dr.Johnson.
So the problem is not overt bias, but denied bias.

    1. We all have bias, by aknowledging them the reader is able to make a better judgement.

Yep, credibility, and although my grammar was incorrect I am glad you understood my meaning which is what matters to me ;)

Approximately half the comments I get are only semi interactive, with the real goal of adding a hyperlink to some commercial product. Just enough text to get past a spam filter.

For this reason I moderate all comments, all the time. I do not delete comments that disagree with me, I welcome them.

I do not approve any comment that contains a link to a commercial product. Such links are not required to make a comment.

In short if you came to pretend to interact but instead advertise, you are wasting your time.

Debate is welcome.
